This is not a smoker’s rights issue. We are not asking anyone to stop smoking. We are merely asking that the pollution of indoor public places with toxic cancer-causing chemicals cease for the good of all citizens. This is a public health issue.
Cigarette smoking poses an enormous threat to human health. 40 years ago the Surgeon General’s office made an unqualified announcement of the harm from smoking. In 1986 the Surgeon General’s office released a report entitled, “The Health Consequences of Involuntary Smoking”. Despite the documented harmful nature of this exposure to the general nonsmoking public, this remains today an entirely preventable public health hazard.
Secondhand smoke is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States. It is estimated to result in over 53,000 deaths per year, including 3,000 lung cancer deaths from people who never smoked.
